How to create a habit and get sh*t done

Start small

If you’re not currently one for exercise and you’ve decided you’re going to start getting up at 6am for 10K runs, this is going to be a near-impossible habit to stick to! So start small, and start smart. Pure willpower won’t get you anywhere if you’ve not given yourself enough time to build up to this big goal. Habits should be regular, achievable and realistic.

Once you achieve one thing, it motivates you to achieve more. Reward yourself at every step and every achievement. And definitely don’t beat yourself up if you fall off the bandwagon. Just get back up and start again.


Your sleep is really important when forming a new habit

It probably sounds obvious, and it might make you want to roll your eyes, but your sleep seriously matters when you want to create a new habit. Consistent sleep is found to improve cognitive function, mood, and ability to really get sh*t done! Creating a healthy habit around your sleep will help you to implement other habits in the long run.

Winding down before bed with a meditation app like Headspace or Calm can be a great way to ease into sleep. Turning off screens just a half-hour before bedtime can make a big difference. We love reading a good book before bed to keep you occupied but without the blue-light of a phone screen that can really mess with your circadian rhythms. Make your lifestyle change really appealing

Figure out WHY you’re making this change. Is it because you want to be able to go hiking when you go on your road trip around Scotland? Is it because you want to feel more alert and confident in your day job? Find your “why”, then break down the steps to get there into manageable chunks.

Now you’ve got your why, you’ve got to motivate yourself to make these changes. Motivation doesn’t just drop from the sky – unfortunately! Sometimes, you’ve really got to make the motivation for yourself. When you crave a change, you have the motivation to act. So once you focus on and find joy in the process of getting stuff done because it’s going to amount to something really exciting, that’s when you’ve cracked the struggle of motivation. When you’re next wondering how to create a habit and keep it, remember that it won’t happen overnight. In fact, it can take anywhere from 18 to 254 days for a person to form a new habit, with an average of 66 days for a new behaviour to become automatic. It’s not easy, but it is very possible. So don’t be hard on yourself if after a few days your new habit isn’t sticking just yet. Keep going!
