“INTUNE with” is a new series, where we get the opportunity to ask an inspiring individual an array of questions. We are able to unpack what spurs them on, helps them find focus and where they source their inspiration.
Nadia is an illustrator from London, working predominantly around minority groups and inclusivity. Nadia began by referencing her own experience as a person of dual heritage, through the medium of self-portraiture, and now specialises in colourful editorial and commercial illustration.
Within your work what important topic do you like to include and feel most passionate about?
Minority representation for sure! Growing up I never really saw people that looked like me, or had experiences like mine in books, tv or magazines, especially not the main characters, so as soon as I was able to, I worked towards trying to change that. Everyone deserves to see themselves represented!
Which companies have you worked with?
Some of my clients include:
V&A, Tate, BBC, Converse, Smirnoff, Red Bull, Refinery29, Footlocker, Nylon Japan, VICE, gal-dem, New Internationalist, Black Girl Fest, South London Gallery
Which project has been your favourite to work on?
My favourite recent (ish!) project was the mural I did with Converse. I don’t usually work very large, so seeing my work on the side of a building in the middle of Shoreditch was completely surreal. It was one of the first times I felt like I was infiltrating mainstream space with my art, so it was a massive confidence boost and incredibly reassuring!
When did you know you wanted this to be your career?
When I realised everything else made me want to scream! Art has always made sense to me, unlike maths or science, and after retaking my maths GCSE three times it was clear that I’d never be an accountant!
When do you feel most inspired?
After spending time outdoors or with friends, and also when I’ve been scribbling notes or making lists.
Describe your work in 3 words
Colourful, thoughtful, inclusive.
What’s your favourite piece you’ve ever created?
Maybe this piece I did for BBC x gal-dem? I’m fond of it in general, but I like it even more after a scathing comment I saw on Instagram after the project went live. It was something along the lines of ‘THIS is what our taxpayer money goes on???’ and it made me laugh so much – the audacity!
What advice would you give you younger self?
Don’t be bitter, be better!
How do you unwind after a long day?
Before the panny-D I’d go and see friends, however, nowadays it’s a glass of wine, Aldi’s finest crisp selection and 3 to 6 hours of reality TV.
Favourite INTUNE flavour?
Ginger+ – I love the zing!
